Nude Beach Walk-OOPS

A few years ago, the resort our dive center was located in, decided to appeal to a small specialized market. They became the first all adult couples resort in Mexico that allowed nudity on their property. I first met C and J (names are not revealed to protect their identity) when the resort was more family oriented, before resort format change was completed.  So C and J decided they would take a walk on our pristine white sand beach. C picked up a piece of driftwood and used it as a walking staff. As C was walking along searching for the perfect sea shell, she would take a step, plant the staff in the soft beach sand, always vigilant for the next sea shell find. She did not notice the nude man laying face down in her path until she almost skewered the poor guy. J was walking ahead of her and knew what was about to happen so he turned and watched the near action. When C realized how close she came to driving the staff into the sun worshipers derriere, they both started laughing at the absurdity of it all. Just goes to prove that even in Paradise you need to watch where you walk. Life is so full of surprises.

Lion Fish Safety Briefing

The DAN Lionfish Safety Briefing

Lionfish are ornate, beautiful creatures. But, beneath the exterior is an elite predator that has become an invasive species and the fish has become a common sight in the North Atlantic Caribbean and the northern reaches of South America’s Atlantic shores. These nocturnal fish are generally docile, which let curious divers approach and risk accidental contact with venomous spines or fins.

Divers can receive a dose of venom when they come in contact (frequently accidental) with the needlelike spines located along the dorsal, pectoral, pelvic and anal fins. Envenomation is rare, but it can be life threatening and may require rapid response by first-aid providers.

Lionfish

Puncture wounds can be painful and may result in rapid edema (swelling) and subcutaneous bleeding (under the skin). Pain can last for several hours, while edema typically resolves in two to three days. The tissue discolorations from the subcutaneous bleeding can last up to five days. In rare cases, swelling can compromise blood flow, leading to ischemia (lack of blood supply) and tissue necrosis (tissue death). This is particularly true for fingertips. These wounds may also become infected.

First aid essentials… The emphasis of first aid for these injuries involves cleaning the wound, controlling pain and applying topical antibiotics.

Test your knowledge of hazardous marine life and take the quiz.
  • Thoroughly wash the area with soap and fresh water.
  • Remove any foreign material.
  • Control bleeding, if necessary.
  • Help control pain by immersing the affected area in the hottest freshwater the patient can stand without causing injury (the upper limit is 113° F/45° C) for 30 to 90 minutes. Repeat as needed. Test the water on yourself in the same area as the injury to make sure it isn’t too hot. Patients with intense pain may have a hard time telling whether hot water is simply hot or is scalding.
  • Ice or cold packs may also provide some relief and reduce swelling.
  • Apply topical antibiotic ointment or cream, if available.
  • Bandage as necessary.
  • Administer pain-control medications if necessary.
  • Seek professional medical evaluation as medical management may include sedatives, tetanus vaccination and antibiotics. In rare instances, advanced life support may also be required.
  • In an emergency, call the local emergency management number (such as 911) and the DAN Emergency Hotline at +1 919 684 9111.

Scuba Camps for Children

Scuba Camps for young children are a safe, fun way to introduce your child to scuba diving, water safety and pool rescue assistance skills. Scuba Camps are usually one to five day, fun loaded events. Children learn pool and general water safety, basic swimming, beginner level scuba diving in very shallow water, in water and out of water rescue assistance and how to work together in teams. Some Scuba Camps, especially for 10-14 year olds, even teach underwater building skills. The children build their own “ship wrecks” or other structures, then submerse them and dive on their own structures to develop buoyancy skills. Scuba Camps, despite the age or skill level of the children involved, all share one huge attribute. They are FUN. They are safe. They develop water safety and pool safety skills which last the child their whole life. Scuba Camps are divided into two age groups. 8-12 year olds with little or no pool or confined water experience do best in the Bubble Maker Scuba Camps, while 10-14 yr olds with basic or intermediate experience levels excel in the Seal Team Scuba Camps. Scuba Camps are suitable for boys and girls alike. Games like underwater torpedo toss, underwater obstacle course, underwater ping pong ball spoon races, pool surface speed races, snorkeling practice and underwater photography, keep the children interested while learning life lessons they will never forget.

Paul and Jennifer Hensley and Macy Hobbs – Director of Youth Scuba are available daily to answer questions. Visit them at Canyon Lake Divers 1482 FM 2673. Watch one of the Scuba Camp videos and see if Scuba Camps can help your child. Phone 830-964-3075

Emergency First Responder

Emergency First Responder course- what is it? The PADI Emergency First Responder course (EFR) is a first aid program to help teach both divers and non divers how to respond and treat typical first aid for water related injuries and common household injuries that may occur in our every day lives. Would you know what to do in the event of a choking event? What if someone in your house needed emergency resuscitation? Would you know what to do? If a child were to fall into your pool would you know how to easily help them without endangering yourself? Would you know how to treat that child? Every had a bad cut, maybe from carving a meal or on broken glass or metal? Would you know what to do to stop the bleeding and treat the wound? The purpose of the EFR program is to help you make the proper treatment decisions in the event of a home or water emergency. Bear in mind this is not nor should it be used as full medical treatment. The purpose is to teach you what to do as a first responder ( the first one to respond to an emergency event). A full medical evaluation should always be included after your emergency first aid has been administered.

In October 2010, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), two members of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), released new CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) guidelines. Emergency First Response programs follow guidelines established by these ILCOR member associations and implement changes whenever protocols are revised. The 2010 guidelines represent the most extensive research into emergency cardiac care to date. These are based on extensive review of various studies, literature, debates and discussions by international resuscitation experts. The new guidelines do not show a great change to the information found in the CPR & AED Participant Manual, and further reinforce emphasis on providing effective chest compressions with minimal interruptions. Studies have shown the importance of providing fast, effective chest compressions as a critical aspect in treating a patient who has suffered cardiac arrest. Most practices, such as the compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2, have not changed. Compression-only CPR continues as a recommendation for untrained individuals. However, the recommendation remains for the trained lay rescuer to perform compressions and ventilations. Can you respond to an emergency? Someone you know may depend on you.

Fiji Wall Sahrks

Fiji – Dive The World

Scuba Dive                       Fiji Wall Sahrks

Fiji’s warm, clear waters and abundance of reef life make the islands a magnet for divers and snorkelers. Visibility regularly exceeds 30m. In terms of visibility the drier months of April to November are more reliable, but in different seasons the diver will experience different things and diving is quite good year round. Many travelers take the opportunity to learn scuba diving while in Fiji.
Our special location close to world famous Beqa lagoon and the amazing variety of local reefs offer an exceptional diving experience. Coral Coast diving offers unexplored diving as well as many dive sites of world renown such as sites in and around Beqa Lagoon. However, there is no such thing as the ‘best’ diving site, especially in Fiji. Every dive site has something special or unique to see and dives range from safe and easy to wall dives in fast currents.
The main advantage of diving on the Coral Coast is the proximity of sites to the coast. The inside reefs can be reached by small boat, currents are usually moderate, and you will see good coral and reef fish. To see bigger pelagic fish and spectacular coral, we will take you to dive the outer reefs and passages. The reef surrounding Beqa is considered one of the world’s top diving locations. Beqa Lagoon, a 64-km barrier reef is famous for its dive sites which include Frigates Pass, a 48m wall dive with large pelagic fish including reef sharks; and Caesar’s Rocks with amazing coral heads and swim throughs.
Waidroka Bay Resort has a full service PADI Dive Shop on site, offering one, two or three tank dives. Waidroka Dive offers well maintained equipment for those that prefer to rent their equipment. We offer dive excursions to dozens of world famous sites along with PADI courses catering to complete beginners through to professional level divers.
Come explorer our abundant and unspoiled hard and soft corals and brilliantly colored walls in clear warm water just minutes from the resort. Whether diving through passages, caves, clearings, or the wreck of the “TASU No.2” with visibility ranging from 50 to 150 feet you will have the opportunity to view sleeping sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins, and an incredible variety of fish.                                                                                                We have it all!See more trip details and book Scuba now here!!

Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving Canyon Lake

The term Scuba is an acronym taken from the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus or S.C.U.B.A. equipment that allows us mere air breathers to explore the depths of our underwater world. About 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered in water. This means there are opportunities to scuba dive all over the world. Oceans, lakes, rivers and even ponds afford divers a very diverse environment in which to enjoy the underwater bounty and experience, first hand, sights that less than 5% of the world’s population ever gets to experience.  Sure, most people have seen underwater movies and documentary’s, but there really is no way to connect to the underwater world until you have experienced it. The oceans, lakes, rivers and streams are teeming with life that  most people never  have the chance to experience.

There are many reasons to scuba dive. For many it is a favorite sport. Aside from the  social aspect, which in itself is a great reason to become involved with scuba diving, there are many other reasons why Scuba diving is becoming more popular worldwide. Technical diving, Research diving, Underwater Archeology and Geology, are highly advanced levels of diving but the vast majority of divers tend  to stick  with diving recreationally. With the advent of newer, more advanced dive equipment, scuba has proven to be an exciting and very safe way to add a new dimension to our lives. Local area diving is fun and affordable.  It is a very good way to celebrate family time by sharing an incredible experience.  Families can easily enjoy diving in their local area. And family vacations take on a whole new dimension when they dive together. To be perfectly weightless underwater watching the colorful reef fish in our oceans is an experience that provides memories forever.   Warning…. scuba diving can be very habit forming.

Paul and Jennifer Hensley are the owner/operators of Canyon Lake Divers at 1482 FM 2673 Canyon Lake/Sattler.  Canyon Lake Divers is the ONLY PADI dive shop in Canyon Lake. Stop by to watch their Underwater videos, to visit and talk about scuba diving. They would love to meet you.  The phone number is 830-964-3075.
